Why SUGAR is the Real Enemy in HYPERTENSION.

Salt has been made the villain in hypertension, but it’s not the whole picture. For decades, the standard medical advice for high blood pressure has been: Reduce your salt intake.

Sadly, your consumption of a bland, salt-free diet hasn’t reduced your numbers.

SUGAR plays a big role in raising blood pressure but is ignored in lowering high blood pressure.

There is an “Insulin-Sodium Connection,” and understanding this will help you control your sugar consumption. I was addicted to sugar many years ago.

Sadly, we now live in a world where high consumption has taken over the daily diet.

The food industry has found its “sweet spot” in creating products loaded with sugar, disguised under different names. These foods help damage your health, which includes your blood pressure.

The “addiction” is so much that many now add sugar to yam pottage or boiled yam.

Why?

How does Sugar raise Blood Pressure?

🎯 High Insulin Levels – Hyperinsulinemia

Let me explain this.

Your regular consumption of a lot of sugar raises blood glucose quickly. This causes the pancreas to release insulin to carry the extra blood glucose into your cells. These consistent or chronic high insulin levels can cause the following:

📌 Increase sodium retention in the kidneys instead of releasing or dumping it. With high levels of sodium, this causes your body to retain water, leading to increased blood volume. This puts pressure on your arteries and raises blood pressure.

🎯 Rusting of your Blood Vessels

This is caused by Oxidative Stress.

Salt is a mineral (sodium), while sugar acts as your fuel for energy. Two particular forms of sugar, fructose and glucose, create “Advanced Glycation End-products” (AGEs), which can damage the proteins of your cells. This leads to a form of rusting, which causes inflammation of the delicate inner lining of your blood vessels. Inflamed blood vessels become stiff and brittle, leading to raised blood pressure.

Know this: It’s Sugar that scars your arteries, not SALT.

🎯 The Fructose-Uric Acid Pathway

Both sugar and High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) contain Fructose. Unlike glucose, fructose is processed almost entirely in the liver, which makes a difference. MOST PACKAGED FOODS CONTAIN HFCS.

One of the byproducts of the breakdown of fructose by the liver is Uric Acid. Nitric oxide, a gas which relaxes your blood vessels, is inhibited by high levels of uric acid. This causes your blood vessels to stay constricted or tight, raising blood pressure and forcing your heart to pump harder.

Uric acid also plays a role in Gout, which can be painful.

🎯 High Sugar consumption promotes weight gain

Weight gain or obesity leads to raised blood pressure.

Excess sugar consumption, consistently, can contribute to insulin resistance, inflammation, and belly fat. Belly fat pumps out inflammatory compounds into your body, damaging it.

All of these raise blood pressure directly or indirectly.

🎯 Let’s take a look at Sugary Drinks.

Research and science show that Sugar-sweetened beverages, like soft drinks, sodas, energy drinks, and sweet teas, are linked to hypertension.

⚠️ Below are research- and science-based figures and information:

📌 Regular soda consumption is associated with a significantly higher risk of developing hypertension.

📌 Even 1 sugary drink per day can raise systolic and diastolic BP over time!!!

🎯 Foods that contribute the most to high sugar intake.

The food industry loves to hide sugar content. Below are the biggest hidden sources:

🎯 Sugary drinks

📌 Soft drinks.

📌 Energy drinks.

📌 Sweet tea.

📌 Fruit punch.

📌 Lemonade.

These spike blood sugar quickly and strongly raise blood pressure!!!

🎯 Processed foods

📌 Granola bars – I refuse to eat them.

📌 Breakfast cereals – I don’t buy or eat them.

📌 Flavoured yoghurt – I only buy unflavoured Greek yoghurt.

📌 Instant oatmeal – but only whole or jumbo oats.

📌 Protein bars.

🎯 Sauces & condiments

📌 Ketchup.

📌 BBQ sauce.

📌 Sweet chilli sauce.

📌 Teriyaki sauce.

I flee from them.
