Let’s take a look at an important health concern regarding the potential risks associated with certain hair products used by Black women . It’s a feminine thing to want to do everything to look good . However , recent studies suggest that some of these products may be linked to serious health issues .
Many of us black women rely on various hair care products to manage , style and to maintain our natural hair. These products include relaxers , dyes , conditioners , shampoos and moisturisers
Research now reveals that a lot of these products contain harmful chemicals that could pose health risks to us .
How ?
1. Chemical ingredients:
Some of the chemical ingredients used such as Phthalates, Parabens , and Formaldehyde-releasing agents known as Endocrine-Disrupting-Chemicals actually disrupt our hormones hence interfering hormonal function such as Estrogen Dominance . Estrogen dominance can lead to fibroids , heavy periods , infertility and even early puberty in children ( I strongly believe that young children shouldn’t be exposed to relaxers at an early age ) .
2. Increased Cancer Risk :
Recent studies have revealed a potential association between the use of hair relaxers and increased hormone related cancers like breast and ovarian cancers . A prolonged use of these products from adolescence can lead to prolonged exposure to carcinogenic compounds
3. Respiratory Issues and Allergic Reactions:
Some hair products especially those used for hair straightening with techniques that require the use of Heat , can release Formaldehyde, a gas which can be an irritant . This can lead to respiratory problems , chronic coughing and some severe allergic reactions .
4. Dermatological Conditions:
Some users have experienced scalp irritation , burns and hair loss ( I’ve experienced these in times past when I was using them) . It’s been discovered that persistent scalp inflammation can lead to conditions like alopecia and other permanent hair and skin damage
Knowledge is Power so Black women can understand and make the right choices and we can protect ourselves from potential harm.
