This has been a long-time debate.
You want the truth?
It’s not totally true. It’s partly true.
“Brown bread” is not automatically healthier than white bread.
Let me explain.
It’s not about the colour of the bread but what the bread is made from.
It’s also about the ingredients.
Understanding this will help you make the right choices at all times.
The truth is that “wholemeal/wholegrain” bread is generally a healthier choice than “refined white bread”.
But not all brown breads are wholemeal or wholegrain!!!
Don’t fall for the “brown bread” trap.
Some brown breads are brown because of added colouring, molasses or other ingredients. They are just white bread made from refined flour that’s been “coloured” to look brown.
So, don’t judge bread by its colour.
Here’s what to look for when buying healthier bread:
📌 “Wholemeal” or “100% whole grain” as a primary ingredient
📌 A good amount of fibre per slice/100 g
📌 Minimal added sugars!!! Agege bread is high in sugar.
📌 A relatively simple ingredient list!!!
Now, take a look at “Regular refined white flour”:
📌 Has had its bran and germ removed (they are nutrient-dense). These are now sold as superfoods.
📌 Has been bleached to get it white.
📌 Has been enriched with vitamins that had been removed during processing (fortified).
Please understand this:
If you are health-conscious, have metabolic syndrome, are diabetic, suffer from fibroids, have heart disease, etc., always choose wholemeal or wholegrain bread.
Let me emphasise: wholemeal bread isn’t automatically a low-GI food. Some wholemeal breads can still raise blood glucose substantially, particularly highly processed, finely milled breads.
Understanding how to recognise and buy the right bread is a whole subject.
For someone managing blood glucose, the following are important:
Fibre content, degree of processing, portion size and what the bread is eaten with. These all matter!!!
For example, wholegrain bread combined with protein, healthy fats and vegetables will generally produce a more favourable meal response than eating several slices of bread alone.
A quick look at refined white bread:
📌 It’s made mostly from refined flour.
📌 Has lower fibre content – fibre is important for overall health.
📌 The vitamins & minerals have mostly been lost during processing, leading to it being fortified with synthetic vitamins and minerals.
📌 It causes a high blood glucose level.
📌 Low in fermentable fibre.
It’s the opposite for real WHOLEGRAIN bread.
I prefer to eat real sourdough bread – a fermented bread that’s low in sugar- and I eat it once or twice every 2- 4 weeks. Buy real sourdough bread from bakers. Bread is not part of my regular diet because of how it can raise blood sugar levels.
Don’t buy bread because it’s brown; buy it because it’s wholegrain.
If your levels of bad cholesterol and blood sugar are high, buy only real WHOLEGRAIN bread.
