Have you noticed how there are mounds of plastic waste on the ground? Also these waste can be seen floating on different bodies of water too. In developing nations its a horrible sight!
- Plastic waste contributes to environmental degradation, impacting ecosystems and food sources. Contaminated soil and water supply can lead to indirect health issues for populations relying on these resources.
- Marine life like fish, shrimps etc consume plastic particles, which can enter the human food chain, leading to potential health risks from toxic accumulation. A lot of fatty fish like Catfish, act as deposits for heavy metals like mercury. Mercury is quite difficult to remove from the body, yet its effects on our bodies can be devastating. Thatβs why itβs important to detox regularly. I learnt so much about this when I did my Detox Specialist Course.

One area that medical science is battling with is Antimicrobial especially bacteria resistance.
- Plastics can serve as surfaces where bacteria can thrive and develop resistance to antibiotics, contributing to the global issue of AMR. Thatβs scary, right? Thatβs another reason why I prefer glassware. The downside of glass is their fragility in terms of breaking.
Another scary part is how plastic affects infants and children the most . Most of the baby and children’s feeding materials like feeding bottles , spoons & bowls are made from plastic and we put hot drinks and food in them .
Pregnant women also pass the chemicals to the fetuses and cause chromosomal error and affect the brain. Itβs crucial for pregnant women to be mindful of what they consume and apply to their bodies. The skin is such a wide area for absorption which is then transferred readily to foetuses.
Here are some trigger factors that affect the integrity of our plastic food containers:
1)The age of the plastic.
2)Frequent washing in the dishwater.
3) Using harsh detergents to wash plastic food containers.
4)Scratches on plastic.
Once you notice a change in integrity of your plastic food containers, bin them!
π4 things to avoid when using plastic food containers :
We must avoid them because they increase the rate at which the chemicals are leached or moved into the food or drinks :
- Heat- putting hot food or drinks in plastic . Heating in the microwave, defrosting food or drinks by placing the plastic in hot water and washing in dish water. This causes leaching of chemicals into our food and drinks.
- Oil – Transferring hot or warm oily food into plastic . Itβs double whammy of heat and oil effects . The heat does a lot of the damage so we must allow food to cool down before introducing into plastic. Oily good never stains glass containers because it canβt affect the integrity of the glass.
- Acidity of Food – Food can be acidic or alkaline( water is neutral ). Acidic and oily foods like tomato sauce and stew can compromise the plastic. You know those orange stains you see in plastic, thatβs a sign of damaged and compromised plastic that will leach harmful chemicals into the food.
The stain is not on the plastic but in the plastic .
What has happened is that the moment the HOT, OILY and ACIDIC stew or sauces come in contact with the plastic container, the BARRIER/PHYSICAL LINES between the plastic and the food are compromised or blurred . The components in the food migrates into the physical structure of the plastic and can never be washed off . On the other hand, the chemical substances like BPA in that plastic , then MIGRATES into the food . Thatβs one way we end up with Endocrine Disrupting BPA in our body leading to Hormonal Imbalance!
- Abrasion – when we use harsh sponges to wash plastic, we compromise it . When we blend nuts etc in a food processor that uses plastic cup or bowl, abrasion occurs and the plastic is compromised. Itβs safer to use glass ones.
Itβs time to take a stand against the damage that plastic caused by being deliberate about reducing its use
