Plastic now seems to be one the most common materials used in packaging for foods , health & beauty products, and other things. Sadly, this is a bad development for our health and the environment.
Years ago,one of the ways we used to store or package our food especially cooked food was in leaves such as banana leaves which are loaded with anti-oxidants called polyphenols. Foods served with these leaves absorb these polyphenols which may help prevent some lifestyle diseases.

Why is Plastic Harmful ?
Plastic can adversely impact health in several ways, primarily through exposure to chemicals used in its production, contamination of food and water, and environmental pollution. Here are some key points illustrating how plastic can damage health:
📌Chemical Exposure:
Bisphenol A (BPA):
Found in various plastics and epoxy resins, BPA is an endocrine disruptor that can interfere with hormone functions, potentially leading to reproductive issues that a lot of women face today which include menstrual dysfunctions and fibroids, developmental problems, and increased cancer risk. Do you know that it mimics the female hormone Estrogen.
There are different types of plastic and understanding this can be a lifesaver.
Phthalates:
These chemicals are used to soften plastics and can disrupt hormone function, potentially leading to reproductive and developmental issues. It’s a reproductive toxin that affects male brains , genital defects , decreases testosterone levels in babies and adults . These are also found in fragrances too. That’s why I never apply fragrances to my skin.
Styrene:
Used in polystyrene products, chronic exposure to styrene is associated with health effects on the nervous system, and it’s deemed a possible human carcinogen. Remember those drinks like latte you buy in those containers? Unfortunately lots of foods and drinks are now sold in styrene products. Try to avoid them like a plague.
Microplastics:
- Microplastics are tiny plastic particles that result from the breakdown of larger plastic debris. These particles can be ingested through food, water, and even inhaled. A lot of bodies of water are contaminated and thus the fish in them are high in contaminants.
- It’s been found that the health impacts of microplastics are not fully understood, but they might lead to inflammation, cellular damage, and disruption of gut microbiota.
