As many people are becoming more health conscious , there’s this transitioning to Vegetable or plant milk . Personally , I only consume plant milk because it’s been revealed that as an adult one doesn’t really need dairy . It’s all advertising gimmicks by the food industry to get us to buy dairy when we hear about getting our calcium from milk . There are good plant sources for Calcium eg Kale
To get our vegetable milk , many of us buy packaged ones from the shops , right ? Here’s why you really shouldn’t 👇🏾
📌Higher cost:
Packaged vegetable milk is generally more expensive than home made. The main ingredients especially when bought in bulk are cheaper . The next major component is water which isn’t expensive This is because of the added costs of production, packaging, and transportation. Even some of the packaging materials can be bad for our health .
📌Added ingredients:
Have you ever sat down to read some of the added ingredients in the labels ? I shudder when I look at those ingredients. Most of those packaged vegetable milk contain added ingredients like preservatives, sweeteners, and thickeners. These may not be healthy or necessary for the body. A lot of them are very unhealthy for the body
📌Lower nutrient content:
Have you noticed that these packaged vegetable milk usually contain a lower nutrient content compared to home made eg almond milk that contains only 12% almonds !!! Really ?Almond milk, for example, should be at least 95% almond . Home made almond milk contains 100% almond ! Also, the processing and pasteurization methods used can destroy some of the nutrients in the milk.
📌Less freshness:
Let’s look at freshness . Packaged vegetable milk is not as fresh as home made, as it is often stored for longer periods of time before being sold. This can affect its taste and nutrient content.
📌Limited flavors and variations:
Do you know that “Home-made” vegetable milk can be made with various types of vegetables, nuts, and fruits, allowing for a wider range of flavors and variations. When you make it at home , you get to add the best quality ingredients to your taste . You can different flavours of tigernut milk as an example . We used to make different flavours in Nigeria like ginger, chocolate, strawberry, banana etc
Don’t fall for the Fat-free scam with packaged vegetable milk . When the fat is removed , they replace with sugar , which makes us fat . We must remember that not all fat is bad – our brain cells require fat and cholesterol
So what do you need to make your home-made milk ?
- The plant material eg nuts, coconut and oats
- Clean water
- A blender
- A cloth to sieve out the milk and remove the chaff
- Containers for the milk
There are a number of nut milk makers available to buy . The cut out the stress of squeezing the milk out from the cloth . You just get the milk come out .
Your homemade milk can be stored in the freezer for preservation
My preferences are coconut milk and tigernut milk . Both have powerful health benefits .
Are you ready to start making yours now.
