Embarking on a sustainable weight-loss journey

Weight-loss and fad diets are a buzz word these days . A lot of people think that weight-loss is a quick fix, but it’s not . It’s a journey and it needs to be sustainable.

Sustainable weight-loss is a long-term process and it actually involves making HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHANGES as this is what actually leads to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight .

There are many crash diets and quick-fix solutions out there but they only provide short term results. They aren’t sustainable in the long run. Some of them are even harmful to health ( eg high animal protein consumption in Keto can damage the kidneys ) and with some of them , once the diet stops , the weight piles on again .

Here are a few strategies to apply for a sustainable weightloss journey ( it’s a journey and not a sprint . It takes a while to pile up in the body and it requires time to lose it )

Setting realistic and SMART GOALS : They must be Specific ( how much weight to lose)

  • Must be measurable eg 1kg etc
  • Must be Achievable: we can’t lose 10kg in a week
  • Must be Relevant to the individual
  • Must be Time bound- set a time

Eating Healthy is the key to sustainable and healthy weight loss . Eating healthy foods that include whole foods , fruit and Vegetables is important while cutting out C.R.A.P Foods

Practicing Portion control is important to avoid overeating .

Staying hydrated is important all day long and this can help in curbing appetite . Remember we are made up of at least 75% water .

Exercise is an important part of a sustainable weight-loss journey . It’s important to engage in physical activity that one enjoys as a daily routine. This helps in burning calories and boosting metabolism. Examples are dancing , walking , swimming, cycling etc.

Managing Stress especially chronic stress is important in this journey . Chronic stress can contribute to weight gain. Some ways of managing stress include meditation, deep breathing and journaling .

Getting enough sleep is important because a lack of sleep can disrupt hunger hormones which then leads to weight gain .

Seeking support is absolutely essential. A supportive network of family , friends and eve weight loss groups can help with accountability .

Tracking progress is essential using tools like food journals, food diaries , fitness and calorie trackers .

Lastly , being patient and kind to oneself plays a role on a sustainable weight-loss journey because it takes time and effort
